November 2011, From PCA Plus:
SAFETY: EVERYBODY OUT! Having a written safety plan is a good thing, but club safety consultant Alan Achatz believes practice makes perfect. He recently reviewed an evacuation drill conducted by a club on the East Coast and was impressed with both the process and the execution. “This particular city club has assigned floor monitors on every shift. In the event of an emergency, their job is to make a sweep of the floor to be sure everyone is out.” In a country club setting, monitors might be assigned to cover specific zones of the building.
He pointed out that firefighters will be able to address the actual emergency sooner if they don’t have to do a search because the building has not been cleared when they arrive.
Achatz also recommends creating “go bags” stocked with essential supplies such as first aid equipment, flashlights, basic tools and a radio as part of an evacuation plan.
For a sample list of “go bag” supplies, visit either the American Red Cross or Community Emergency Response Teams (CERT).
NEW! "Safety Director" Services: Club Safety Solutions is here to make your club safer and your life easier. Many clubs do not have the resources to hire a safety director nor the time to learn about all the safety regulations that impact your club’s operation. So instead of incurring the expense to hire a safety director, allow Club Safety Solutions.to introduce a new program called: “SAFETY DIRECTOR” Services.

SAFETY FIRST: POLICIES AND PREVENTION... The phrase “better safe than sorry” takes on new meaning after a warning from club safety consultant Alan Achatz:
“The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is shifting its focus from prevention to enforcement,” he said. “Beyond the immeasurable cost of pain and suffering, club leaders should be aware that fines and penalties can be extensive, and that a vast majority of accidents are preventable with proper safety policies and training programs.”
Achatz recently completed a study of accidents, injuries and fatalities in the club industry over a 10-year period from January 1, 1998, to December 31, 2007. “Data obtained from the Department of Labor shows that during the study period, OSHA investigated 77 accidents involving the Standard Industrial Codes (SIC 7997 & 8641) that include private clubs,”
Of the 77 accidents in the report, 45 (nearly 60 percent) were fatal. Causes included drowning, vehicular accidents, falls and burns. Incidents occurred in virtually every department of the club, from the kitchen to the golf course.
Since very few clubs have a dedicated safety director on staff, promoting employee awareness and enforcing OSHA compliance (especially record-keeping) is often a challenge. While the sheer volume of regulations and requirements can be daunting, there are a number of helpful resources available. As a starting point, a thorough safety audit will shed light on potential hazards in and around the club.
Achatz said his company’s walk-through audits and follow-up policy recommendations are modeled on the process an OSHA inspector would use to evaluate a facility, “minus the penalties.”

Alan Achatz, CCM, CHE has written a safety book for the Club Managers Association of America.
The book is titled, Embracing Safety at Your Club and can be purchased on the CMAA webite: Order a copy of Embracing Safety at Your Club.
Topics are wide ranging and encompass situations that all businesses should address from accident prevention and accident investigation, disaster planning, marinas, safety team development/enhancement, swimming pools to concerns with young workers. And of course, weather related concerns are addressed for all areas throughout the United States. The concept for the publication is to raise safety awareness, thereby increasing the probability of keeping employees safe.
